Japanese folklore presents Shinigami to be a less terrifying version of the western Grim Reaper, the harvester of souls. Situated on the southern border of Gifu and Aichi prefectures, the town of Tajimi is best known for being the center of production for Mino-yaki ceramics for the past 10 centuries. Shi is the Japanese word for death, while kami is the word used for gods and spirits. ![]() It comes from two Japanese words shi and kami. Kuro-ikazuchi: (Black thunder) The Kojiki says that this deity came from Izanami's belly however, the Nikon Shoki says that Kuro-ikazuchi was in Izanami's rectum. What is a Shinigami The word Shinigami translates to death god. Shisai Shu naru Kami ni kansha shi tatematsuru beshi Kaish Sowa seit ni shite nasu beki koto nari.Hono-ikazuchi: (Fire thunder) Both the Kojiki says that this kami came from Izanami's breasts. Tajima, situated in the northern part of Hyogo prefecture, is an area overflowing with natural beauty such as mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and the Sea of Japan.Ō-ikazuchi: (Great thunder) both the Kojiki states and the Nihon Shoki state that Ō-ikazuchi came from Izanami's head.Many versions of the Nihon Shoki and the Kojiki state that after Izanagi saw his wife in such a state and fled in terror, Izanami send the Yomotsu-shikome, 150 warriors, and the eight thunder kami after him. Some tellings say that the eight deities were from the maggots of Izanami's rotting corpse. Ikazuchi (雷) literally means thunder in Japanese. ![]() Each one represents a different type of storm.
